Recruiting

Post  Progurt on Thu Jul 26, 2012 5:21 pm

I'm looking for ideas for recruiting. The problem we have is that we're a very niche group. Globally marxists have generally been pro-gun, but most on the far left in the US came there moving leftward from conventional liberalism and disillusionment with the Democratic Party. There the mindset, for a long time, and again recently, has been anti-gun. I think modern marxists and anarchists may not understand the historical role that personal firearms have played in the fight for equal rights and workers rights.

So let's see if we can do some education on that. Like this account:
Forgotten heroes. Rob Williams. Armed resistance in the civil rights movement
Rob Williams lived in North Carolina in the 50’s, and headed a local chapter of the NAACP. The Klan would often drive into the black part of town, opening fire on homes. The police did nothing to stop it. Williams trained other Blacks in firearms usage. The next time the Klan rode in and opened fire, they received a disciplined volley of gunfire in return. No one was hurt, and the Klan never returned. However, this signaled a major break with the pacifist mainstream wing of the civil rights movement of the time as he advocated armed resistance.

Tim Tyson

Tim Tyson is a great Robert F. Williams biographer.

He also has this jewel:

Rosa Parks

TIM TYSON: There's a sense in which Mrs. Parks is very important to our post-civil rights racial narrative, because we really want a kind of sugar-coated civil rights movement that's about purity and interracial non-violence. And so we don't really want to meet the real Rosa Parks. We don't, for example, want to know that in the late 1960s, Rosa Parks became a black nationalist and a great admirer of Malcolm X. I met Rosa Parks at the funeral of Robert F. Williams, who had fought the Ku Klux Klan in North Carolina with a machine gun in the late 1950s and then fled to Cuba, and had been a kind of international revolutionary icon of black power. Ms. Parks delivered the eulogy at his funeral. She talks in her autobiography and says that she never believed in non-violence and that she was incapable of that herself, and that she kept guns in her home to protect her family. But we want a little old lady with tired feet. You may have noticed we don't have a lot of pacifist white heroes. We prefer our black people meek and mild, I think.

Mary Weiss Stange

Post  Xela on Fri Jul 27, 2012 12:33 am

Mary Weiss Stange is a pro-gun feminist:
stange

Other names we've thrown around the LGC:

Don B. Kates
Gary Kleck
Mark Benenson
Paxton Quigley (more of a LIbertarian now I think. But one of his past publishers described her as liberal Democrat.)
Cindy Hill (http://www.vermontwoman.com/articles/1105/gun_rights.shtml)

And "revolucionarias" are many across the ages now. But the USSR, Cuba, Nicaragua, Spain, Mexico, South America, Ireland, Vietnam, China, Africa...etc. Many revolutionary wars/conflicts had women soldiers, commanders, snipers...

Of course we also have the risk of covering Cambodia (pol pot), Ghadaffi's female bodyguards, and similar.

P.S. Love the Malcolm X picture.

From Sarajevo

Regarding Sarajevo....

I've brought up 2 female snipers on the Bosnian side. One codenamed Arrow (Stridjela), the other was called Nadia/Nadja Jeriagic.

Images of them and their stories over at Dukes post on How to Survive a Siege:
Duke's post on How to Survive a Siege

The problem there is that there were also some pretty bad momma's on the Serbian side, and who could forget the "white stockings" in several of the former Soviet republics.
